Ed Sheeran's Loop Tour · September 14, 2026 · updated 2026-09-20
Macklemore played two MetLife Stadium shows, then lost eight scheduled appearances. Four later departures covered different tour roles.
The lineup changed
On September 14, Macklemore announced that he had been removed from eight scheduled appearances on Ed Sheeran's stadium tour, the Loop Tour. Macklemore said Sheeran and his team made the decision; tour promoter Messina Touring Group said venues had told it they would not allow concerts with Macklemore on the lineup, which it said would have meant cancelling the tour and affected hundreds of thousands of fans.125

we have been notified by venues on the upcoming U.S. tour dates that they will not allow a concert to take place with Macklemore on the lineup
which would result in the cancellation of the tour and impact hundreds of thousands of fans
Sheeran said Macklemore's contract was with the promoter. The artist, promoter and venue records saved through September 20 do not include that contract or its terms for content and removal.2
Macklemore's contract for the tour was with the promoter, not me.
The dispute reaches beyond one lineup because three parties can shape what a stadium audience hears. AP asked three music-business participants who were not involved in Sheeran's tour to explain how authority is divided among a venue, promoter and headliner: a venue can refuse an act, a promoter pays the performers and deals with venues, and the headliner generally has substantial approval over the show.32
Neither Gary nor Waddell nor Serwin are involved in the Sheeran tour.
The promoter puts up the money, pays all of the acts, deals with the venue.
Certainly they can lock the doors
at the end of the day that superstar headliner is going to have approval over everything
The objections followed Macklemore's first MetLife Stadium show on September 4. There, he said “Free Palestine” and showed images of destruction in Gaza; he later said Sheeran told him those words and “the image of the Palestinian flag” had hurt people Sheeran spoke with. Macklemore also performed “Hind's Hall.” The song was written after the 2024 campus protests, refers to Columbia University and is named for Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian girl killed in Gaza.25127

Written following the 2024 campus protests in support of Palestinians, it’s named for Hind Rajab, a 5-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed after Israeli forces fired on her family’s car in Gaza City.
Pink, a singer, reposted an Instagram message from StopAntisemitism, a pro-Israel campaign group, that accused Macklemore of ambushing fans; she later said she had not asked for him to be silenced or fired.2625 Macklemore said, “I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim. Pink is not a victim,” and said all three still had careers, money, safety and audiences around the world.1
the campaign group StopAntisemitism said the musician had ambushed fans with propaganda - a claim that was amplified by the pop star Pink, who reposted it on Instagram.
I have never asked for another artist to be silenced and I’m not asking now. I don’t need anyone fired, and I don’t need a refund.
I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim. Pink is not a victim.
We have careers, money, opportunities, safety and audiences around the world.
Sheeran's official North American schedule listed 27 shows, with 10 after September 14.11 Macklemore had been scheduled for eight of the later dates and had already appeared at both MetLife Stadium dates, on September 4 and 5.2513

On September 15, Finneas, Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham and Beoga announced that they were leaving.29 Rowe and Lukas Graham were billed as U.S. support alongside Macklemore on his eight remaining dates, Beoga was performing several songs inside Sheeran's set, and Finneas was booked for the South American dates.1229

Sheeran said Macklemore had asked to join the tour the previous year and he agreed because he respected him as an artist.2 He said Macklemore, like all his support acts, chose his own setlist.2 Sheeran said venues threatened to pull shows after Macklemore's performances because of how part of his message was conveyed. He spent the week speaking with them, including Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, but could not change the venue and promoter decision.282 He said he would not abandon fans, crew, support acts or musicians who relied on him for work, and that his audience included children and families who did not expect a political forum.2
Last year Macklemore asked to join my tour and I agreed, because I respect him as an artist.
As with all my support acts, I agree that they play a setlist of their choosing.
After Macklemore's performances, venues for my upcoming tour dates communicated that they would pull the shows if he was still supporting. This was based on how a part of his message was conveyed.
I spoke with the venues at length all week to try to build a bridge, including with Robert Kraft, but the venue's and promoter's decision was final.
I would never let down the fans who had made plans, nor would I abandon the touring crew and the other support acts and musicians who rely on me for work and to make a living.
My audience includes children and families, and they do not expect a political forum when they come to my shows.

MetLife to venue objections
The first performance drew criticism from pro-Israel groups. After that show, the Israeli American Council, an advocacy group, launched a petition calling for Macklemore's removal. It addressed Sheeran, tour leadership and every venue hosting the tour, and asked whether his speech, visuals and “Hind's Hall” had been approved in advance.2510
This spurred much criticism and backlash from pro-Israel groups.

The American Jewish Committee, an advocacy group that criticized the performance, said its New Jersey office contacted MetLife Stadium about the show. AJC said stadium administrators raised its concerns directly with the tour and artists and offered refunds before the second show to ticket holders who chose not to attend.7

An unnamed person told The Wall Street Journal that representatives of several NFL owners contacted the promoters after the first show and “heard back that Macklemore would leave out any mention of the issue from his act.” The Journal did not say who gave the assurance.35

At the second MetLife show, Macklemore again called for a free Palestine. He addressed “all of my Jewish brothers and sisters,” said criticism of Israel and apartheid and being against genocide were not criticism of them, and said his message was peace, love, dignity, respect and equality.3525

Robert Kraft, the Gillette Stadium owner, confirmed that the venue had refused Macklemore. He said allowing Macklemore to appear on September 25 and 26 would make the venue a “platform for hate speech.”28

do not provide a platform for hate speech
we determined that his participation in the September 25th and 26th concerts at Gillette Stadium would cross that line
Kraft cited Macklemore's recent actions, “material shared from the stage during Ed Sheeran's shows in New Jersey, and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery.” He said the decision was not intended to diminish innocent Palestinians' suffering or deny anyone the right to advocate for them, and that such advocacy should not obscure Hamas's responsibility.28
Macklemore’s recent actions, material shared from the stage during Ed Sheeran’s shows in New Jersey, and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery
This decision is not about diminishing the suffering of innocent Palestinians or denying anyone the right to advocate on their behalf.
But that advocacy should not come at the expense of the Jewish community or obscure the responsibility of Hamas
Macklemore said Sheeran maintained an “I don't take sides” position. He said he had made the same statements on stages for almost three years and argued that their association with a larger artist, major U.S. stadiums and bigger audiences made them newly risky.1
he couldn't get past his public facing, "I don't take sides."
What I said at MetLife I have been saying on stages around the world for almost three years.
Because now I'm sharing a stage with one of the biggest artists in the world, in some of the biggest stadiums in America.
Macklemore said antisemitism was real, but argued that criticism of Israel or opposition to Zionism should not be conflated with hatred of Jewish people.1
Antisemitism is real.

In reporting Messina's claim that venues had objected, Rolling Stone named seven alleged objectors: Gillette Stadium, Raymond James Stadium, Lincoln Financial Field, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Lucas Oil Stadium, Bank of America Stadium and AT&T Stadium.25 Alan Clendenin, a Tampa Sports Authority board member and Tampa City Council chair, said the lineup change had nothing to do with the authority, which manages the county-owned Raymond James Stadium.3924
The venues that allegedly objected to the rapper include: Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia; Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts; Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta; Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis; Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina; AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas; and Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
One member, Tampa City Council chairperson Alan Clendenin, said the change "doesn't have anything to do with the Tampa Sports Authority."
Tampa Sports Authority conveys ownership of Raymond James Stadium® to Hillsborough County but retains responsibilities of managing the facility.
Several of the seven named venues are publicly owned or publicly run, which matters only if a government body took part in excluding an artist over what he said; public ownership alone does not show who made the decision or whether constitutional protections apply, and the Philadelphia records request asks exactly whether public entities took part.229
The team's lease of the City-owned stadium
whether the City of Philadelphia or PAID was notified, consulted, asked for approval, or otherwise involved
Rolling Stone identified Bank of America Stadium and Gillette Stadium as privately owned.25 Official records show that Georgia's stadium authority owns Mercedes-Benz Stadium.21 Indiana's stadium authority owns Lucas Oil Stadium.23 Arlington owns AT&T Stadium.22 Hillsborough County owns Raymond James Stadium.24 Philadelphia owns the land under Lincoln Financial Field.20 The Falcons organization operates Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Cowboys operate AT&T Stadium, and public boards operate Lucas Oil Stadium and Raymond James Stadium.21222324
Earlier that summer, Raymond James Stadium had booked a different artist under terms that FOX 13 reported limited the stadium authority's power to cancel. The outlet said the contract for two Kanye West concerts “explicitly blocks” the Tampa Sports Authority from canceling or interfering because of the artist's identity, past statements or political views, and that the promoter had requested the clause. The contract itself had not been published by September 20, so those terms remain FOX 13's account.40 Venue refusals can lead a promoter to remove an act from a national tour, but no public Sheeran-tour contract shows whether Macklemore had a similar clause or who made the final decision.2532
The 38-page contract features a specific clause that explicitly blocks the TSA from canceling or interfering based on the artist's identity, past public statements or political viewpoints. West's promoter, Ikon Global, requested the clause.
After discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore will not be performing on the remaining support dates.
If you’re paying for everything, yes you can make that call
FOX 13 also reported that West's team accepted lawsuit liability and the promoter agreed to pay more than $2 million in stadium expenses plus $5 for each ticket sold. Before the concerts, FOX 13 said the authority would collect those fees while West's team would keep the remaining revenue, which the outlet put at possibly more than $20 million.40 In August, the Tampa Bay Times reported that the authority made an estimated $3.44 million from the two shows. It said all spending on food, drinks and parking, plus part of merchandise and ticket sales, went to the authority.41
The Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed sources, that Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank and Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie joined the pressure.35
More than that, several other National Football League owners were also ready to cancel Sheeran’s dates as long as Macklemore remained on the bill.

Rowe later said the criticism should focus on Kraft rather than Sheeran, while maintaining that Macklemore should not have been removed.36
when you really should be focusing on the likes of [New England Patriots owner] Robert Kraft.
Rowe affirmed that he didn’t think Macklemore should’ve been pulled off the tour
Beoga departed as Sheeran's band for the remaining U.S. dates. The band said it would not play venues that silence artists for saying “Free Palestine.”6

We encourage everyone to research Robert Kraft, his relationship with Israel and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.
Lukas Graham objected to wealth determining who gets to speak and withdrew from the remaining dates. The band also said there was not one single reason for its decision.5

On September 17, the Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil-rights advocacy group known as CAIR-Philadelphia, announced that it had submitted a Pennsylvania Right-to-Know request concerning the Philadelphia lineup decision. The request asks for records from August 1 to September 15 showing who made or was told of the decision, what policy or contract term was cited for excluding a performer, and whether the City of Philadelphia or its industrial-development authority was consulted.9

The September 19 Philadelphia show went ahead, and Sheeran began alone with no support act. He later introduced a new five-member backup band, made up of a drummer, guitarist, bass player, keyboardist and violinist, that had joined with three days' notice. He said he removed a secondary stage used at other concert stops because he feared what could happen if he stood in the middle. A small group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside before the concert.343834 On September 20, Lincoln Financial Field's event page still listed Macklemore, Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe for the show.16

AEG Presents' official schedule, as saved September 21, still listed Macklemore, who had been removed, and Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe, who had withdrawn, on the dates that had booked Macklemore; it listed Rowe on the two Hollywood dates.12154 That schedule and the artists' statements named no replacement opening act for the remaining dates. The only personnel added after the changes that the reports saved through September 20 identify are the five members of the backing band Sheeran introduced in Philadelphia after three days' notice.38 Those reports do not say whether the band continued to later dates.
