Sullivan) and the other a retired teacher from the small southeast town of Petersburg (Dan J. Sullivan) — have been a flashpoint in the 2026 race for Senate.</p><p class="text | article-text">Dan J. Sullivan entered the race at the <a href="https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2026/06/15/petersburg-dan-sullivan-removed-senate-race/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2026/06/15/petersburg-dan-sullivan-removed-senate-race/">end of May</a> and was <a href="https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2026/06/15/petersburg-dan-sullivan-removed-senate-race/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2026/06/15/petersburg-dan-sullivan-removed-senate-race/">removed from the ballot</a> on June 15 by the elections division, citing the following <a href="https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2026/06/29/petersburg-sullivan-remain-ballot-state-supreme-court-rules/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2026/06/29/petersburg-sullivan-remain-ballot-state-supreme-court-rules/">reasons</a>:</p><div class="in-body-element mx-auto ibe-ads-arc-ads"><div class="w-100" style="height:90px"></div></div><ol class="list | article-list" type="1"><li><span>Choosing the name “Dan Sullivan” was intended to “confuse” himself with another candidate.</span></li><li><span>Sullivan’s party choice “strongly suggests an intent to confuse” himself with the incumbent Senator.</span></li><li><span>Sullivan’s campaign imagery “appears to be [a] deliberate” copy of the senator’s.</span></li><li><span>Sullivan’s use of a political consultant who has previously advocated for Democrat Mary Peltola, also running for the same Senate seat.</span></li></ol><p class="text | article-text">That case went to a Superior Court and the State Supreme Court. In both cases, the courts sided with the Petersburg Sullivan, ultimately <a href="https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2026/06/29/petersburg-sullivan-remain-ballot-state-supreme-court-rules/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2026/06/29/petersburg-sullivan-remain-ballot-state-supreme-court-rules/">reinstating the candidate on the ballot</a> — one day before the state’s deadline to print ballots.</p><p class="text | article-text">The state argued candidates must file in “good faith,” which the Division of Elections used to justify Sullivan’s removal. The Supreme Court’s order does not address that standard directly.</p><p class="text | article-text">Chief Justice Susan Carney said in a hearing before the decision that a full rationale would come at a later date. Almost a month later, the court <a href="https://appellate-records.courts.alaska.gov/CMSPublic/Case/Docket?q=w6sobc/DATc4vP2vv76aFg==%27" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://appellate-records.courts.alaska.gov/CMSPublic/Case/Docket?q=w6sobc/DATc4vP2vv76aFg==%27">still has not</a> issued an explanation for the ruling.</p><div class="in-body-element mx-auto ibe-ads-arc-ads"><div class="w-100" style="height:90px"></div></div><p class="text | article-text">National Republican groups like the NRSC have disputed that his party choice, Republican, was chosen to confuse voters, something Sullivan has denied. The argument made to the State Supreme Court from the Division’s attorney, Christopher Murray, cited an election law provision saying a candidate must be registered “as affiliated with a political party or group.” Their solution was to nix his party affiliation altogether.</p><p class="text | article-text">“If ... he ever registered with the Republican Party, he did it when he filed his declaration of candidacy,” Murray said.</p><p class="text | article-text">“But he’s registered,” Justice Jennifer Henderson responded.</p><p class="text | article-text">Concern continued.</p><div class="in-body-element mx-auto ibe-ads-arc-ads"><div class="w-100" style="height:90px"></div></div><p class="text | article-text">“The [election] division’s proposal not to list him as Republican after certifying his declaration of candidacy as a Republican would appear to be a little outside its discretion, wouldn’t it?” Chief Justice Susan Carney asked during the hearing. “Don’t they have to list him as a Republican?”</p><p class="text | article-text">The one-paragraph order from the court directed the Division to determine how Sullivan would <a href="https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2026/06/25/alaska-judge-facing-june-30-deadline-rule-sham-candidate-sullivan-court-case/" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2026/06/25/alaska-judge-facing-june-30-deadline-rule-sham-candidate-sullivan-court-case/">appear on the ballot</a> “within the confines of existing Alaska ballot design law.”</p><p class="text | article-text">But when the ballot was printed, the concerns of the justices in removing the candidate’s party didn’t make its way onto the ballot. Sullivan’s name was altered <a href="https://www.elections.alaska.gov/election/2026/Primary/SampleBallots/HD1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="" title="https://www.elections.alaska.gov/election/2026/Primary/SampleBallots/HD1.pdf">on the ballot</a> to “Sullivan, Daniel J. Jr.” and he was suddenly the only candidate in the race without a party.</p><p class="text | article-text">Since the ballot was printed, Alaska’s News Source has repeatedly asked the Division of Elections why his party was removed.</p><div class="in-body-element mx-auto ibe-ads-arc-ads"><div class="w-100" style="height:90px"></div></div><p class="text | article-text">On June 30, elections division staff did not return the request for comment, so Alaska’s News Source went to the Division’s Anchorage offices. Kirch spoke with a reporter briefly, then hung up when pressed for an explanation.</p><p class="text | article-text">Alaska’s News Source filed a public records request that day. On July 16, Beecher responded, saying she wouldn’t say how or why Sullivan’s party affiliation was stripped from the August primary ballot and delayed the public records request.</p><p class="text | article-text">“DOE will not identify the records ‘sufficient to show’ how, why, when, or where decisions or actions occurred,” Beecher’s letter reads, citing election statutes.</p><p class="text | article-text">Beecher interpreted KTUU’s formal records request to fall under an “electronic services and products” request, which is a more time-consuming and costly interpretation for delivery, versus a standard records request for the specific documents as filed by KTUU.</p><div class="in-body-element mx-auto ibe-ads-arc-ads"><div class="w-100" style="height:90px"></div></div><p class="text | article-text">On July 22, Beecher and Kirch appeared at a legislative hearing over “Candidate Eligibility Criteria.” The hearing largely centered on how Dan J. Sullivan was formatted on the ballot, as well as how Sen.
